Since last summer thousands of young people have been fleeing violence and devastating poverty in Central America, crossing the U.S. border seeking asylum. Rather than being welcomed, the Department of Homeland Security threatened to deport them back to their home countries.
Public pressure forced them to wait rather than deport them immediately. But rather than following the process of releasing these children to family members in the U.S. to await their asylum hearing, the administration decided to indefinitely jail thousands of children and mothers in “new family detention centers” in Dilley and Karnes, Texas. These centers have terrible conditions. And even worse, they are private prisons operated FOR PROFIT by Corrections Corporation of America and GEO Group.
